Perry is born the 25th of July 1968 in Chicago, Illinois to Laurie Metcalf Perry and Jeff Perry. Two of her earliest television performances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother played her role. Perry did not decide to explore acting as a profession until after she had reached adulthood because her parents were afraid of the negative effects that stress could have. Perry was a shy teenager and did not act. She began acting in the year 2000 at Northwestern University to gain friends after she was moved from Boston University. Following her graduation, Perry went to New York to search for jobs on television, landing small parts in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent but homesickness brought the actress back to California and she was able to find theater work. The Other Place was performed by her and her mom on Broadway in 2013. She appeared in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie and Kevin McKidd. This was staged in the West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry starred in nine episodes of ABC's show The Family. Her father portrayed her in the ABC show Scandal. That same year she was cast as a younger model of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again portraying a younger model of the mother's role. She was cast in the role through an open audition despite being a fan of the role.
